Dearest Martha,
The dim light of dusk is all I can use. Makes it hard to write. They are sending us to the wall in the morning.
I miss having you by my side at night.
‘deed I do.
There are rumors about the walls. They say an entire battalion vanished during an attack.
I can smell your hair.
‘deed I do.
We sent scouts to test the wall defenses. None came back.
Remember the days before they arrived? Sweet summer nights, warm fire in the hearth in the winter, our dog peacefully sleeping at our feet. These dreams keep me alive. I need you to live.
‘deed I do.
We found a wayward cube two days ago. Proved the rumors true. Leave them where they lie. Please.
We are so hungry. I can smell your beef stew as it slowly cooks on the fire.
I can taste it too.
‘deed I do.
Running out of food. The resupply corps was cut off by a couple of cubes. Thought they could go around them, but cubes move.
It’s getting too dark now. Best I get some rest before the morning assault. I don’t mean to frighten you. I’ll write again. My hopes try to fade, but my thoughts of you keep them alive. I save them, out of habit.
‘deed I do.
In the days to come, look at the stars. For I will do the same. We’ll pretend we are laying on the roof together. As we did before.
Just know how much I miss you.
‘deed I do.
With all my love,
Martin.
